Troy Aikman – The Signature Smiling Assassin of America’s Team

Troy Aikman

Few players personified the Dallas Cowboys championship pedigree in the 90s more than legendary quarterback Troy Aikman. His prototypical size, elite accuracy, and poise under pressure made Aikman the perfect offensive captain to restore glory to America’s Team.

The Cowboys made Aikman the No. 1 overall pick in 1989 to revamp the offense, and former UCLA standout quickly rewarded Dallas with MVP caliber play. His picture-perfect fundamentals and ability to dissect defenses led to six Pro Bowl nods along with the 1993 NFL MVP. Aikman utilized his cannon arm and pinpoint control to spearhead an aerial attack dictating games via the pass first.

But his greatest gift involved rising up in crucial moments on the grand playoff stage. In Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX, Aikman outdueled his counterparts by totals of 11 touchdowns to zero interceptions, earning MVP in XXVII while cementing his reputation as a Cool-handed postseason killer.

By the time concussions forced an early retirement in 2001, Aikman left an indelible mark on Cowboys history through both production and leadership. His 90 wins in the decade marked the most by a starting quarterback at the time. Beyond the numbers, Aikman’s prototypical pocket style and steely on-field demeanor epitomized an era of championship stability that still resonates with Dallas fans today. Few wore the Star with more efficient excellence than the smiling cowboy assassin, Troy Aikman.
